What you’ll see

During a penumbral lunar eclipse the Moon passes only through Earth’s penumbra — the pale outer fringe of its shadow. The dimming is subtle: expect a soft shading on one side of the Moon rather than a dramatic bite. Deep penumbral eclipses are noticeable with the naked eye; shallow ones are easier to detect in photographs.

The Moon Explorer app computes this eclipse’s circumstances for your exact location — local times, moonrise and moonset around the event — entirely offline, and can remind you the day before and on the day.
